Compassion and Comfort

2003-09-11 at 9:27 p.m.

Two years ago I was exactly where I was today. At work. I remember being in the deli that day and being in charge of making the pizza dough. I remember a regular customer of ours coming into the store and asking us (Little Bit was working the register that morning) if we had heard that a plane crashed into one of the World Trade Center buildings.

All I could think at the time was how in the world could the pilot not have seen a building that tall right in front of him. I walked up to the front where Little Bit had turned the radio on just in time to hear about the second plane crashing. It was like my whole world just stopped. The pizza dough forgotten. Customers all grouping around the register to listen to the horrific events that were taking place.

It was so silent that day. No one seemed to be able to voice any of their thoughts. Indeed, if they were like me, their brains had sort of frozen like their hearts, not allowing for thought much less words.

Today, the second anniversary of that horrendous day, was different in that the people weren't silent. Subdued somewhat. Quieter than usual, but not silent.

Words can tear a world apart and pierce deeper than any sharpened blade, but they can also heal wounds and comfort the soul, drawing together hearts that these utterances had originally seperated.

May the Lord and Lady gently whisper in all of our ears the words of compassion and comfort.
